تقنية IPTV هي خدمة جديدة ، تقدم ماتوفره التلفزيونات الحديثة بجودة عالية، ناقلة بذلك الصوت والصورة عبر خطوط الانترنت عالية السرعة مباشرة إلى أجهزة التلفاز التي في منازلنا. تتعامل هذه التقنية مع الصوت والصورة على أنها معلومات تنتقل عبر الانترنت على هيئة رزم – كما يحدث في تبادل الايميلات – يتم استقبالها لتنقل بذلك احدى المباريات نقلاً مباشراً أو لتعرض برنامجاً وثائقياً ، تماماً كما تفعل القنوات الفضائية. الفارق هنا يكمن في اعتماد تقنية IPTV اعتماداً كلياً على خدمات الانترنت التي توفرها شركات الاتصال.
